HVAC news and marketing in Prince Edward Island

PEI is small but heat-pump-heavy: heat pumps were the primary heating system in 36% of households in 2023. Several efficiencyPEI heat pump programs closed in 2026, which changes what customers ask contractors.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Prince Edward Island is a small market with a big heat pump footprint. Statistics Canada reports that in 2023 heat pumps were the primary heating system for 36% of PEI households, while 28% used oil, 18% electricity and 8% wood as their primary heating energy. PEI also filed 14,014 oil-to-heat-pump applications, second only to Nova Scotia, per NRCan. In 2026, several heat pump incentives closed, so contractors now face a market without the programs that drove the last few years.

The market and its buyers

The short answer: a compact island where reputation travels fast.

Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall are the main centres, but much of the island is rural and every contractor's reputation is visible to every neighbour. Buyers include oil-heated homes still to convert, households with first-generation heat pumps, cottage and seasonal property owners, and income-qualified homeowners eligible for free insulation. Because the market is small, a handful of reviews and a strong Google Business Profile can make a large difference.

Climate and seasonality

Surrounded by the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the island gets snowy, cold winters that the water takes the sharpest edge off. Winter storms and wind make reliable heat and backup systems important. Seasonal properties create a spring opening and fall closing rhythm for service work.

Regulators to know

  • Inspection Services covers boilers and pressure vessels, electrical, plumbing and propane. Boiler and pressure vessel work requires a Mechanical Contractor Licence, and anyone servicing propane appliances needs an LP Gas Personnel Licence.
  • PEI Apprenticeship for certification.
  • WCB PEI for workers' compensation.

We link these bodies; compliance questions belong with them.

Programs as of October 2026

  • Residential heat pump equipment rebates. Ended April 15, 2026; purchases made between April 15, 2025 and April 15, 2026 may still be claimed within one year of purchase.
  • Free Heat Pump Program and OHPA. The efficiencyPEI page states applications are closed; we could not confirm the closing date.
  • Free Insulation Program, expanded under the June 29, 2026 CGHAP agreement by about $15 million for 1,800+ income-qualified homeowners.
  • National Heat Pump Rebate, due in 2027; see our story.

What we're watching in PEI

Our main question for PEI is what replaces the closed heat pump rebates. The province may launch new incentives, or customers may simply wait for the federal rebate in 2027. We are also watching the expanded Free Insulation Program for intake details, which were not confirmed when we checked, and the end of the current Mechanical Contractor Licence cycle on December 31, 2027, which every boiler and pressure vessel contractor will need to renew.

Because PEI's market is small, every change shows up quickly in what customers ask. A contractor who keeps a short log of the questions callers raise each week will see shifts in demand before any official statistic does, and can adjust their website and ads to match. That habit costs nothing and is one of the most useful things a small-market owner can do.

How we'd approach marketing in PEI

  1. Update every rebate mention. Any PEI contractor page written before 2026 may still describe programs that have since closed. Correcting them, with dates, is the quickest trust win. Our program pages service handles this.
  2. Explain the claim window. Customers who bought in the year before April 15, 2026 may still claim; a clear page helps them and positions you as helpful.
  3. Pair insulation and heating. With the free insulation expansion, contractors can explain how envelope upgrades change heating needs.
  4. Lean on reviews. In a small market, steady review requests matter more than ad volume.
  5. Plan for 2027. The federal rebate may restart demand; publish accurate content before it opens.

See our results, or call, text or email through the contact page. We are a marketing service, not an HVAC contractor.
